UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
