Two Separate Cuba-bound Aid Ships Declared Missing after Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive rescue and recovery operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated boats transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Maritime Rescue Efforts Launched
The Mexican government has sent navy personnel and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than 9 crew members, per a navy statement.
The ships had been expected to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.
Context of Relief to the Island
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island endures multiple power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy said.
The nine-person crew are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their consular staff.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Earlier Humanitarian Delivery
Just days before, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.
That ship, called "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and provisions.
Larger International Context
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a energy blockade on the island nation began.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""severe" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Political tensions have been ramped up lately, with remarks from various representatives underscoring the complicated situation regarding diplomatic ties.
In response to previous proposals, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that early stages of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to discover the vessels and guarantee the safety of the crews.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
