Israelis have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.

A senior delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.

The official said the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the both parties.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Post-war management of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose family member endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."

"When we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis desire the war to finish in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk falls, the dread comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.

"We are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, notably my little child who rests his face on me all night."

"Every second we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had received the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medical staff said.
