Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
