The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in a generation are being hailed as a "huge turning point" in the fight against superbug strains of the pathogen, according to health experts.

A Global Health Concern

Cases of gonorrhoea are on the rise worldwide, with figures suggesting over 82 million infections each year. Especially elevated rates are observed in the African continent and nations within the World Health Organization's Western Pacific region, which spans from China and Mongolia to New Zealand. As per findings released by a prominent scientific publication, the new drug successfully treated more than 90% of genital gonorrhoea infections. The trial enrolled nearly 1,000 volunteers from various regions including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.
