Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities released video stills Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
