Hardline Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Next President.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Centered On Security and Immigration
Known for his unwavering Catholic views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily focused on promises to tackle increasing violence and drastically curb migration.
He consistently cited foreigners, particularly the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he issued an ultimatum for them to leave before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.
His proposals included U.S.-style measures such as erecting holding facilities, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Continental Trend
Numerous commentators see Kast's victory as aligning with a larger right-wing trend in South America, following recent political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts also frame it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Clear Mandate
In spite of his decisive electoral win, Kast will not hold an overall majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all conservative parties are counted together.
This political landscape may complicate his agenda, including a promise to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"There are many aspects about how a Kast presidency will look like that we don't know because he has not said his methods for implement them," said a political science expert.
The analyst continued, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies associated with the right. However where there is considerably less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse during the campaign."
