A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by three individuals, one of whom shot at him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose of the attack remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the site managing the installation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, according to reports.

"The report indicates the victim was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement confirmed.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the attack.

Key evidence, like spent shells, were found at the location.

Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have have information to come forward.

"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and investigators have been tracking them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.

His sister, Nicole Stock, expressed the loved ones are reeling to process his death.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," she said.
