Explosions and Low-Altitude Jets Witnessed in Venezuela's Capital Caracas
Reports circulated of several detonations and the roar of low-altitude planes in Caracas in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning. This event has led to accusations from the Venezuelan authorities and demands for diplomatic scrutiny.
Caracas Accuses US of Aggression
The socialist regime has accused the Washington of what it calls "imperial aggression," stating that former President Trump allegedly directed military strikes against the Latin American nation. In an official declaration, the authorities stated that strikes had hit Caracas and several other provinces: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua state.
"The sole aim of this attack is to gain control of our nation's natural resources, especially its oil and resources," Venezuela said.
The government called on the international community to denounce the operations, which it described a "clear infringement of international norms" that endangered millions of lives at risk in danger.
Reports of Blasts and Military Sites Hit
Locals described experiencing at least several detonations around 2 a.m. in the morning. Residents in different neighborhoods allegedly hurried into the streets.
"The whole ground shook. It was frightening. We experienced explosions and planes in the sky," stated one witness.
Black smoke was observed pouring from key defense sites in the city: the La Carlota airbase military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base military base, where leader Maduro is thought to have a residence.
Global Condemnation
The president of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, claimed on X that "At this moment they are attacking Venezuela... attacking it with missiles." He demanded an swift meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Colombian government, which just became a member of the UNSC, said it would activate operational plans at its border with Venezuela.
Preceding Events
These alleged attacks are preceded by a prolonged military buildup by the US against the Maduro administration. Beginning in August, there has been a major naval deployment off the country's northern coast and a series of air strikes on ships accused of illegal activities.
Venezuela's government has announced "the implementation of external disturbance" and commanded all national defense measures to be implemented. It has also urged its supporters to protest and "reject this imperialist act."
American officials and the Pentagon did not promptly commented on requests for clarification regarding the reports.
