The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
