Dominant Hearts Outclass Meek Celtic to Extend Eight Pts in Front
Key points
- Kyziridis & Shankland secure victory for the hosts and send them eight ahead at summit
- Celtic's McGregor cancelled out early Murray own goal
- Hearts extend 13 league matches unbeaten for first time in 27 years
The dominant Edinburgh side surged eight ahead of Celtic at the top of the Scottish top flight to strengthen their early title credentials and deepen the malaise around Brendan Rodgers' side.
A superb goal from Kyziridis and a spot-kick from Shankland gave the Hearts team a two-goal advantage that the title holders could not overcome.
The young defender - among three youth players in the Celtic starting lineup - scored an own goal early on to put Hearts ahead at a bouncing their home ground, and it was the 22-year-old's foul that led to the spot-kick.
A stylish finish from McGregor of the season had swiftly equalized the first goal, and Benjamin Nygren almost put Rodgers' team in front, choosing placement over power and allowing the Hearts keeper to make a crucial stop.
But the unstoppable Hearts side seized control again to consign Celtic to successive league defeats for the first time since last year.
It also gives the Hearts a significant lead at the top of the table.
The last time they were so far clear was in the 2005-2006 season under George Burley, when they ultimately finished second - one of just four occasions that a team has failed to win the title having held such a lead in the last three decades.
McInnes, whose former team were runners-up to the champions on four occasions, has been at pains to play down title talk, as the club seek their maiden league title since 1960.
The Celtic boss has experienced this previously at Celtic - both flawless and stuttering starts to a season. He's never ended as runner-up.
But on Sunday's evidence, this Edinburgh outfit showed they deserve serious consideration.
Match Analysis: The hosts Take Advantage of Depleted Celtic
Hearts started with the confidence of a side undefeated in the league this season - the popular attacker delivered a ball for the striker to stab wide.
The Glasgow team didn't help themselves with some unusual sloppiness in possession and they buckled under their first real examination.
Claudio Braga's header was touched on to a post by Kasper Schmeichel and Shankland's return ball was turned into the net by the unfortunate Murray, in for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The away side grew into the contest and started building moves. From a flowing attack, Sebastian Tounekti released the full-back to square for McGregor, who rolled in.
Apart from the opportunity for Nygren, Celtic struggled to create much for lone frontman Jonny Kenny or his substitute Yamada amid the absence of stricken attackers their key strikers.
The home team rediscovered their energy and versatility in creating chances in the opposition half. Kyziridis, a standout performer of the club's scouting network, fired a low shot past Schmeichel from the edge of the box.
Immediately after, the defender tripped Braga in the inside right channel and Shankland converted. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had replacement Ageu not been stopped by Schmeichel.
Celtic's second half was partially encapsulated in a couple of moments involving big-money recruit Engles.
The set-piece from Engles delivery was in stark contrast to his midweek exploits in the Europa League win over Sturm Graz and the national team player was then yellow-carded for a professional foul.
What They Said
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes: "You see how hard the players work, the team spirit. That's not always enough to win games week in, week out.
"Our strength lies in, is skillful players. You're witnessing it from a lot of players who have been here previously. Some of the new signings are keen to demonstrate their quality.
"We've got a good thing going at the minute, but it's just one win. It's crucial for us to keep winning. We've got much work ahead, loads to do. Following the initial fixtures is normally an indication of where you are."
The Celtic boss: "It's a really poor goal from our perspective. We failed to push up when the play was recycled as a defensive unit so when they pass the ball, they should have players offside but didn't. We have got to improve with the attempt.
"Plenty of matches to play for. It's only the beginning. It's only nine games in. Clearly, being eight points behind is not what we would want. The comfort is there's numerous fixtures to play.
"Our attention must turn on the here and now and look to achieve greater stability and better performance in our play."
